North Shore Shark Cage Diving from Haleʻiwa
- 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours (approx.)
Overview
Haleiwa Shark Tours is the only shark cage-diving company on Oʻahu's North Shore that is owned and operated by Native Hawaiians: big-wave surfers and lifelong watermen Kala Alexander and Makua Rothman. From Haleʻiwa you motor about three miles offshore while the crew shares the place of the manō (shark) in Hawaiian culture, from family guardians (ʻaumākua) and the shark god Kamohoaliʻi to drums and tools once made from shark skin and teeth. At the dive site, guests take turns snorkeling in a floating cage at the surface, with masks and snorkels provided, as sharks such as Galapagos sharks circle around it. Guests who would rather stay dry can come along as boat riders and watch from the deck. The company runs two boats, the 12-passenger Kamahele Kai ("ocean traveler") and the 6-passenger Mano kalani po ("shark of the heavenly night"), with tours every day.
